Ingredients
- All-purpose flour - 250 grams
- Active dry yeast - 5 grams
- Sugar - 10 grams
- Salt - 3 grams
- Water (warm) - 150 ml
- Vegetable oil - 15 ml
- Soy sauce - 30 ml
- Hoisin sauce - 15 ml
- Maple syrup - 10 grams
- Five-spice powder - 2 grams
- Mushrooms (finely chopped) - 100 grams
- Carrot (finely diced) - 50 grams
- Tofu (crumbled) - 100 grams
- Green onions (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
Steps
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a pan, heat a little oil and sauté the chopped mushrooms and diced carrots until softened.
- Add the crumbled tofu, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, five-spice powder, and chopped green onions. Cook for another 5 minutes until well combined. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 10 cm in diameter.
- Place a tablespoon of the filling in the center of each circle, fold the edges over to seal, and shape into buns.
- Place the buns on parchment paper squares and let them rise for another 20 minutes.
- Steam the buns in a steamer basket over boiling water for 15 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
