Ingredients
- Seitan - 200 grams
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
- Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
- Five spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
- Ginger powder - 1 teaspoon
- Red food coloring (optional) - a few drops
- Cornstarch - 1 tablespoon
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped for garnish
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, five spice powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, and red food coloring (if using). Mix well to create the marinade.
- Slice seitan into thin strips or bite-sized pieces and add to the marinade. Ensure all pieces are well-coated, then cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
- Preheat your grill or a non-stick pan over medium heat. While it heats, remove the seitan from the marinade and set the marinade aside.
- Sprinkle cornstarch over the seitan pieces and toss to coat evenly. This will help create a nice texture when cooking.
- Drizzle sesame oil in the pan or on the grill. Cook the seitan for about 5-7 minutes on each side until slightly charred and heated through.
- During the last few minutes of cooking, brush the reserved marinade over the seitan to glaze it. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and allow to rest for a minute. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
