Ingredients

  • Seitan - 200 grams
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Five spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Red food coloring (optional) - a few drops
  • Cornstarch - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped for garnish

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, five spice powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, and red food coloring (if using). Mix well to create the marinade.
  2. Slice seitan into thin strips or bite-sized pieces and add to the marinade. Ensure all pieces are well-coated, then cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
  3. Preheat your grill or a non-stick pan over medium heat. While it heats, remove the seitan from the marinade and set the marinade aside.
  4. Sprinkle cornstarch over the seitan pieces and toss to coat evenly. This will help create a nice texture when cooking.
  5. Drizzle sesame oil in the pan or on the grill. Cook the seitan for about 5-7 minutes on each side until slightly charred and heated through.
  6. During the last few minutes of cooking, brush the reserved marinade over the seitan to glaze it. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  7. Once cooked, remove from heat and allow to rest for a minute. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
