Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 400 grams
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Maple syrup - 30 ml
  • Rice vinegar - 15 ml
  • Sesame oil - 15 ml
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
  • Vegetable broth - 240 ml
  • Green onions - 2, chopped
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon
  • Red chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15-20 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger to create the marinade.
  3. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and let them soak for at least 15 minutes.
  4. In a large skillet or wok, heat a little oil over medium heat and add the marinated tofu cubes, reserving the marinade.
  5. Sauté the tofu until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  6. In the same skillet, add the vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
  7. Mix cornstarch with a few tablespoons of water to create a slurry, then stir it into the simmering broth.
  8. Add the reserved marinade back into the skillet and stir well to combine, cooking for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  9. Return the tofu to the skillet, tossing to coat in the sauce, and let it braise for an additional 5-7 minutes.
  10. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and red chili flakes if desired.
