Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Szechuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
  • Soy sauce (low sodium) - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2, chopped
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for about 15 minutes to remove excess moisture and then cut it into bite-sized cubes.
  2. In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of chili oil over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry until they are golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove tofu from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of chili oil, Szechuan peppercorns, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Stir well to combine.
  5. Return the fried tofu to the pan and toss in the sauce until fully coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the tofu to absorb the flavors.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro before serving.
