Ingredients

  • White fish fillet (e.g., tilapia or cod) - 250 grams
  • Lemon - 1 medium (zested and juiced)
  • Fresh ginger - 1 inch, sliced thinly
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Soy sauce (halal) - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Spring onions - 2, chopped
  • Coriander (cilantro) - a handful, for garnish
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste

Steps

  1. Rinse the fish fillet under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the lemon juice, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger slices, black pepper, and salt to create a marinade.
  3. Place the fish fillet in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it, ensuring it is evenly coated. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  4. While the fish is marinating, prepare a steamer (or use a bamboo steamer) and bring water to a boil.
  5. Once the fish is marinated, place it on a heatproof plate and sprinkle the lemon zest and chopped spring onions on top.
  6. Carefully place the plate in the steamer and cover it. Steam the fish for about 8-10 minutes, or until it is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Once cooked, remove the plate from the steamer and garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
