Ingredients

  • White fish fillets (such as tilapia or cod) - 300 grams
  • Firm tofu - 200 grams
  • Sichuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch, minced
  • Green onions - 2, chopped
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Chili bean paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Chicken or vegetable broth - 200 ml
  • Cornstarch - 1 tablespoon
  • Water - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste

Steps

  1. Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels and season with salt and black pepper on both sides.
  2. Cut the firm tofu into cubes and lightly fry them in a non-stick pan with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the remaining vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add Sichuan peppercorns and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add minced garlic and ginger to the pan, and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the chili bean paste, soy sauce, and broth, then bring to a simmer.
  6. Add the fish fillets to the pan, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until they are cooked through and flaky.
  7. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry, then stir it into the pan to thicken the sauce.
  8. Gently fold in the fried tofu and chopped green onions, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  9. Drizzle with sesame oil before serving.
