- White fish fillets (such as tilapia or cod) - 300 grams
- Firm tofu - 200 grams
- Sichuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch, minced
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Chili bean paste - 1 tablespoon
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Chicken or vegetable broth - 200 ml
- Cornstarch - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 2 tablespoons
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
Steps
- Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels and season with salt and black pepper on both sides.
- Cut the firm tofu into cubes and lightly fry them in a non-stick pan with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the remaining vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add Sichuan peppercorns and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add minced garlic and ginger to the pan, and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the chili bean paste, soy sauce, and broth, then bring to a simmer.
- Add the fish fillets to the pan, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until they are cooked through and flaky.
- In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry, then stir it into the pan to thicken the sauce.
- Gently fold in the fried tofu and chopped green onions, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Drizzle with sesame oil before serving.
