Steps

  1. Cut the fish fillets into bite-sized pieces and the firm tofu into cubes. Pat both dry with paper towels.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 100 milliliters of water to create a slurry and set aside.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat. Add Sichuan peppercorns and dried red chilies, stirring for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add minced garlic and ginger to the pot, sautéing for another 1-2 minutes until they release their aroma.
  5. Pour in the chicken or fish stock and soy sauce, bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  6. Carefully add the fish pieces and tofu cubes into the pot, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through and tofu is heated.
  7. Stir in the cornstarch slurry to thicken the broth, cooking for an additional 2 minutes.
  8. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
