- Sichuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Soy sauce (gluten-free) - 2 tablespoons
- Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
- Chili oil - 1 tablespoon
- Honey - 1 tablespoon
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped
- Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
- Vegetable oil - for frying
Steps
- Press the tofu for about 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
- In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, chili oil, honey, and sesame oil to create the marinade.
- In a pan, dry roast the Sichuan peppercorns over medium heat until fragrant, then grind them into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder.
- Add the minced garlic, ginger, and ground Sichuan peppercorns to the marinade, mixing well.
- Marinate the tofu cubes in the mixture for at least 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the tofu is marinating, prepare a frying pan with vegetable oil, heating it over medium-high heat.
- Toss the marinated tofu cubes in cornstarch until evenly coated.
- Fry the tofu in batches until golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 5-7 minutes per batch.
- Once fried, remove the tofu from the pan and let it drain on paper towels.
- Serve the crispy Sichuan BBQ tofu hot, topped with chopped green onions.
