Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • Unsalted butter - 100 grams, chilled and cubed
  • Cold water - 60 ml
  • Ground beef or lamb - 200 grams, Halal
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Carrot - 1 small, finely diced
  • Green peas - 50 grams, fresh or frozen
  • Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Oyster sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and cubed butter, mixing until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add cold water gradually, mixing until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, add a little oil and sauté the onions and garlic until translucent.
  4. Add the minced meat to the skillet, cooking until browned. Stir in the carrot, green peas, soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, black pepper, and five-spice powder. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then let it cool.
  5. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  6. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 0.5 cm thickness. Cut out two circles large enough to fit your pie dish.
  7. Place one circle in the pie dish and fill it with the meat mixture. Cover with the second circle and seal the edges by crimping with a fork.
  8. Brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
