- Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
- Five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garlic (minced) - 2 cloves
- Spring onions (finely chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil (for frying) - 500 ml
- Lemon wedges (for serving) - 2
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and five-spice powder.
- Add the cleaned squid rings to the bowl and toss to coat them evenly with the flour mixture.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).
- Carefully add the coated squid rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the squid from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- In a separate pan, sauté minced garlic and chili flakes in a little oil until fragrant, then toss the fried squid with this mixture and add chopped spring onions.
