Ingredients

  • Fresh Chinese steamed bun - 2 pieces
  • Shiitake mushrooms - 200 grams, finely chopped
  • Firm tofu - 100 grams, crumbled
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2, chopped
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Cucumber - 1/2, thinly sliced
  • Fresh cilantro - a handful, chopped

Steps

  1. In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, sautéing until fragrant.
  2. Add the chopped shiitake mushrooms and crumbled tofu to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes until mushrooms are tender.
  3. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and five-spice powder. Cook for another 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Remove from heat and mix in chopped green onions and sesame oil. Set aside to cool.
  5. Steam the Chinese buns according to package instructions until warm and soft.
  6. To assemble, slice the steamed buns in half and fill each with the mushroom and tofu mixture.
  7. Top with thin cucumber slices and fresh cilantro before closing the bun.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade vegetarian Rou Jia Mo.
