- Fresh Chinese steamed bun - 2 pieces
- Shiitake mushrooms - 200 grams, finely chopped
- Firm tofu - 100 grams, crumbled
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Hoisin sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Rice vinegar - 1 teaspoon
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Chinese five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
- Cucumber - 1/2, thinly sliced
- Fresh cilantro - a handful, chopped
Steps
- In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, sautéing until fragrant.
- Add the chopped shiitake mushrooms and crumbled tofu to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes until mushrooms are tender.
- Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and five-spice powder. Cook for another 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and mix in chopped green onions and sesame oil. Set aside to cool.
- Steam the Chinese buns according to package instructions until warm and soft.
- To assemble, slice the steamed buns in half and fill each with the mushroom and tofu mixture.
- Top with thin cucumber slices and fresh cilantro before closing the bun.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade vegetarian Rou Jia Mo.
