Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 250g
  • Warm water - 120ml
  • Instant yeast - 5g
  • Sugar - 10g
  • Salt - 2g
  • Mushrooms (shiitake or button) - 150g, chopped
  • Green onions - 2, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tsp, minced
  • Soy sauce - 2 tbsp
  • Sesame oil - 1 tsp
  • Carrot - 50g, finely grated
  • Cornstarch - 1 tbsp
  • Black pepper - to taste

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  3. In a skillet, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger, sautéing for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped mushrooms, grated carrot, and green onions. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until mushrooms are soft.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, black pepper, and cornstarch. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 10cm in diameter.
  7. Place a tablespoon of the mushroom filling in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges and pinch to seal the baozi tightly.
  8. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the baozi on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the buns are golden brown.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Mushroom Baozi!
