- Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
- Sichuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Vegetable oil - for frying
- Burger buns - 2 pieces
- Cucumber - 1 small, thinly sliced
- Fresh cilantro - a handful, chopped
- Lettuce leaves - 2 pieces
- Mayo - 2 tablespoons
- Sriracha - 1 teaspoon
Steps
- Press the firm tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 2 equal-sized slabs.
- In a spice grinder or mortar, grind Sichuan peppercorns to a coarse powder.
- In a bowl, mix cornstarch, ground Sichuan pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder to create the spice mixture.
- Coat each tofu slab evenly with the spice mixture.
- Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, fry the tofu slabs for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
- While the tofu is frying, prepare the sauce by mixing mayo and sriracha in a small bowl.
- Toast the burger buns lightly in the same pan or in a toaster.
- Assemble the burgers by spreading the sriracha mayo on the bottom bun, adding a lettuce leaf, a crispy tofu patty, slices of cucumber, and chopped cilantro before placing the top bun.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your spicy Mala Tofu Burger!
