Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
  • Sichuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Vegetable oil - for frying
  • Burger buns - 2 pieces
  • Cucumber - 1 small, thinly sliced
  • Fresh cilantro - a handful, chopped
  • Lettuce leaves - 2 pieces
  • Mayo - 2 tablespoons
  • Sriracha - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Press the firm tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 2 equal-sized slabs.
  2. In a spice grinder or mortar, grind Sichuan peppercorns to a coarse powder.
  3. In a bowl, mix cornstarch, ground Sichuan pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder to create the spice mixture.
  4. Coat each tofu slab evenly with the spice mixture.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, fry the tofu slabs for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
  6. While the tofu is frying, prepare the sauce by mixing mayo and sriracha in a small bowl.
  7. Toast the burger buns lightly in the same pan or in a toaster.
  8. Assemble the burgers by spreading the sriracha mayo on the bottom bun, adding a lettuce leaf, a crispy tofu patty, slices of cucumber, and chopped cilantro before placing the top bun.
  9. Serve immediately and enjoy your spicy Mala Tofu Burger!
