Ingredients

  • Ground lamb - 400 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Green onion - 2, finely chopped
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Bao buns - 4
  • Cucumber - 1, thinly sliced
  • Carrot - 1, julienned
  • Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Cilantro - a handful, chopped

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground lamb, minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, five-spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 2 equal patties, about 2 cm thick.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil. Cook the lamb patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 70°C.
  4. While the patties are cooking, prepare the cucumber and carrot salad by mixing the sliced cucumber, julienned carrot, rice vinegar, and half of the chopped cilantro in a bowl.
  5. Steam the bao buns according to package instructions, usually about 5-10 minutes.
  6. Once the patties are cooked, assemble the burgers by placing each patty in a steamed bao bun, topping with the cucumber salad, a drizzle of hoisin sauce, and the remaining cilantro.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy your high protein Chinese lamb burger!
