Ingredients

  • Ground beef - 300 grams
  • Szechuan peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free) - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Romaine lettuce leaves - 4 large
  • Cucumber - 50 grams, thinly sliced
  • Radishes - 50 grams, thinly sliced
  • Green onions - 2, chopped
  • Cilantro - a handful, chopped
  • Szechuan chili oil - 1 tablespoon (optional for extra heat)

Steps

  1. In a small pan, toast the Szechuan peppercorns over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and grind them into a fine powder.
  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, ground Szechuan peppercorns, garlic powder, ginger powder, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Divide the beef mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties.
  4. Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  5. While the patties are cooking, prepare your toppings by slicing the cucumber and radishes, and chopping the green onions and cilantro.
  6. Once the patties are done, remove them from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
  7. To assemble, place each beef patty on a large romaine lettuce leaf, top with cucumber, radishes, green onions, and cilantro. Drizzle with Szechuan chili oil if desired.
  8. Wrap the lettuce around the filling like a burger and enjoy!
