Ingredients

  • Portobello mushrooms - 4 medium-sized
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Spring onions - 2, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Clean the Portobello mushrooms with a damp cloth and remove the stems.
  2. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, brown sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, and ground black pepper to create the marinade.
  3. Place the mushrooms in the marinade, ensuring they are well-coated. Let them marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  5. Place the marinated mushrooms on the grill, gill side down, and cook for 5-7 minutes.
  6. Flip the mushrooms and grill for another 5-7 minutes until tender and slightly charred.
  7. Remove from the grill and let rest for a couple of minutes.
  8. Garnish with chopped spring onions and sesame seeds before serving.
