Ingredients
- Eggs - 4 large
- Water - 500 ml
- Soy sauce (gluten-free) - 60 ml
- Black tea bags - 2
- Star anise - 2 whole
- Cinnamon stick - 1
- Salt - 1 tsp
- Sugar - 1 tsp
- Five-spice powder - 1/2 tsp
Steps
- Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the eggs simmer for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water to cool for 5 minutes.
- Gently crack the eggshells all over without peeling them, and set aside.
- In the same saucepan, add 500 ml of water, soy sauce, black tea bags, star anise, cinnamon stick, salt, sugar, and five-spice powder. Bring this mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and add the cracked eggs back to the saucepan.
- Cover the saucepan and let the eggs steep in the tea mixture for at least 30 minutes, or longer for a stronger flavor.
- Remove the eggs from the liquid and peel them gently. The eggs are now ready to serve.
