Ingredients

  • Pork belly - 500 grams
  • Soy sauce (gluten-free) - 4 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce (gluten-free) - 2 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic (minced) - 3 cloves
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 tablespoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Green onions (for garnish) - 2 stalks

Steps

  1. Prepare the marinade by mixing soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, five-spice powder, and black pepper in a bowl.
  2. Cut the pork belly into 1-inch thick slices and place them in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.
  3. Pour the marinade over the pork belly, ensuring all pieces are well-coated. Seal the bag (or cover the dish) and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, ideally overnight for maximum flavor.
  4. Preheat your grill or oven to 200°C (400°F). If using an oven, line a baking sheet with foil for easier cleanup.
  5. Remove the pork belly from the marinade and let any excess marinade drip off. Reserve the marinade for basting.
  6. If grilling, place the pork belly slices on the grill and cook for about 20-25 minutes, flipping occasionally and basting with the reserved marinade.
  7. If roasting, place the pork belly slices on the prepared baking sheet and roast for 30-35 minutes, basting with the reserved marinade halfway through, until the edges are crispy and caramelized.
  8. Once cooked, remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  9. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.
