Ingredients

  • Duck breast - 2 pieces (about 300g total)
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Honey - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Score the skin of the duck breasts in a crosshatch pattern without cutting into the meat.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the five-spice powder, soy sauce, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper to create a marinade.
  3. Place the duck breasts in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably 2 hours.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  5. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the duck breasts skin-side down in the skillet and sear for about 5-7 minutes until the skin is crispy and golden brown.
  6. Flip the duck breasts and sear the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes.
  7. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and roast for about 10-15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 65°C (150°F) for medium-rare.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the duck rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  9. Serve the duck slices garnished with chopped green onions and drizzle with remaining marinade if desired.
