Ingredients

  • Ground beef (80% lean) - 250 grams
  • Chinese five spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic (minced) - 1 clove
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Soy sauce (low sodium) - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Burger buns (kosher) - 2 pieces
  • Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Cucumber (sliced thin) - 1/2 cup
  • Green onion (sliced) - 1/4 cup
  • Cilantro (fresh leaves) - 1/4 cup

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, five spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into two equally sized patties, about 1.5 cm thick.
  3. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  4. While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
  5. Once the burgers are cooked, assemble them by spreading hoisin sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
  6. Place the patty on the bun, then top with sliced cucumber, green onion, and fresh cilantro.
  7. Cover with the top half of the bun and serve immediately.
