Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • Sugar - 30 grams
  • Instant yeast - 5 grams
  • Milk - 150 ml
  • Butter - 20 grams, melted
  • Eggs - 2 large
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Cornstarch - 20 grams
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Water - for steaming

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, instant yeast, and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and one egg until combined. Gradually add to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  4. While the dough is rising, prepare the custard filling. In a saucepan, whisk together the remaining egg, cornstarch, sugar, and vanilla extract. Gradually add in 150 ml of milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a custard. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a circle and place a spoonful of custard in the center. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling inside.
  6. Place the buns on a piece of parchment paper. Prepare a steamer and bring water to a boil. Carefully place the buns in the steamer, cover, and steam for about 15 minutes.
  7. Once cooked, remove the buns from the steamer and serve warm.
