Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
  • Vegetable oil - 4 tablespoons (for frying)
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Red chili flakes - 1 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Spring onions - 2 stalks, chopped
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a bowl, toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the tofu cubes and fry until golden and crispy on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  5. In the same pan, add a little more oil if needed, and sauté the minced garlic and grated ginger for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add the red chili flakes, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar, stirring to combine all the ingredients.
  7. Return the crispy tofu to the pan and toss well to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  8. Drizzle the sesame oil over the tofu and mix in chopped spring onions.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
