Ingredients

  • Prawns (peeled and deveined) - 200 grams
  • Cornstarch - 50 grams
  • All-purpose flour - 50 grams
  • Egg - 1 large
  • Garlic (minced) - 1 clove
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Spring onions (finely chopped) - 2 stalks
  • Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) - 500 ml

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the prawns, garlic, ginger, spring onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for 10 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and egg until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Add the marinated prawn mixture to the batter and mix until the prawns are well coated.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
  5. Using a spoon or your hands, form small balls (about 2 cm in diameter) from the prawn mixture and carefully drop them into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  6. Fry the prawn balls for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning as needed for even cooking.
  7. Once cooked, remove the prawn balls from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce.
