Ingredients

  • White fish fillets (e.g., cod or tilapia) - 300 grams
  • All-purpose flour - 100 grams
  • Cornstarch - 50 grams
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cold water - 150 ml
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) - 500 ml
  • Corn tortillas - 4 pieces
  • Cabbage (shredded) - 100 grams
  • Fresh cilantro (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
  • Lime (juiced) - 1 piece
  • Sriracha sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Mayonnaise - 2 tablespoons

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and Chinese five-spice powder.
  2. Gradually add cold water to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).
  4. Dip the fish fillets into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place them into the hot oil.
  5. Fry the fish for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Warm the corn tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side.
  7. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, lime juice, and Sriracha sauce to create a spicy sauce.
  8. Assemble the tacos by placing shredded cabbage on each tortilla, followed by a piece of fried fish, a drizzle of the spicy sauce, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro.
  9. Serve immediately with extra lime wedges on the side.
