Ingredients
- Firm tofu - 400 grams
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Chinese five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Red food coloring (optional) - a few drops
- Green onions - 2, for garnish
- Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon, for garnish
Steps
- Press the firm tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes. Wrap it in a clean towel and place a heavy object on top.
- In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red food coloring (if using). Mix well to create the marinade.
- Cut the pressed tofu into thick slices or cubes and add it to the marinade. Ensure all pieces are well coated and let marinate for at least 10 minutes.
- Preheat a grill or a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lightly grease the surface.
- Remove the tofu from the marinade, reserving the marinade for basting. Grill the tofu for about 3-4 minutes on each side, basting with the reserved marinade until it is caramelized and has grill marks.
- Once cooked, remove the tofu from the heat and let it rest for a couple of minutes.
- Slice the grilled tofu into bite-sized pieces, serve on a plate, and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
