Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 400 grams
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Red food coloring (optional) - a few drops
  • Green onions - 2, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon, for garnish

Steps

  1. Press the firm tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes. Wrap it in a clean towel and place a heavy object on top.
  2. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red food coloring (if using). Mix well to create the marinade.
  3. Cut the pressed tofu into thick slices or cubes and add it to the marinade. Ensure all pieces are well coated and let marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat a grill or a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lightly grease the surface.
  5. Remove the tofu from the marinade, reserving the marinade for basting. Grill the tofu for about 3-4 minutes on each side, basting with the reserved marinade until it is caramelized and has grill marks.
  6. Once cooked, remove the tofu from the heat and let it rest for a couple of minutes.
  7. Slice the grilled tofu into bite-sized pieces, serve on a plate, and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
