Ingredients

  • Glutinous rice - 100 grams
  • Coconut milk - 200 ml
  • Water - 200 ml
  • Palm sugar - 50 grams
  • Pandan leaves - 2
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Rinse the glutinous rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked rice and place it in a steamer lined with cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel, spreading it out evenly.
  3. In a saucepan, combine the coconut milk, water, palm sugar, and a pinch of salt. Heat over medium until the sugar has dissolved, but do not boil.
  4. Add the pandan leaves to the coconut mixture and bring to a gentle simmer. Let it infuse for about 10 minutes, then remove the pandan leaves.
  5. Pour half of the coconut mixture over the soaked rice in the steamer, reserving the other half for serving later.
  6. Steam the rice over boiling water for about 30-35 minutes or until it becomes translucent and tender.
  7. Once cooked, remove the rice from the steamer and let it cool slightly. Serve warm in bowls, drizzling the remaining coconut mixture over the top.
  8. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds before serving.
