Ingredients
- Chicken thighs - 400 grams, boneless and skinless
- Soy sauce (gluten-free) - 3 tablespoons
- Honey - 2 tablespoons
- Shaoxing wine - 1 tablespoon
- Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Green onions - 2, chopped for garnish
- Sesame seeds - 1 teaspoon, for garnish
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, Shaoxing wine, five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, and black pepper to create the marinade.
- Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours for deeper flavor.
- Preheat a charcoal grill to medium-high heat. If using a grill pan, heat it over medium-high heat on the stove.
- Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing excess marinade to drip off. Reserve the marinade for basting.
- Place the chicken on the grill and cook for about 6-8 minutes on each side, basting with the reserved marinade halfway through, until the chicken is cooked through and has nice grill marks.
- Remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving. Enjoy your Cantonese Charcoal Chicken!
