Ingredients

  • Pork shoulder - 300 grams
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Hoisin sauce - 30 ml
  • Honey - 30 grams
  • Five-spice powder - 5 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Burger buns - 2 units
  • Cucumber - 100 grams, sliced
  • Fresh cilantro - 10 grams, for garnish
  • Mayonnaise - 30 grams (optional)

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil to create the marinade.
  2. Cut the pork shoulder into thick strips and marinate in the mixture for at least 30 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator for enhanced flavor.
  3. Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Place the marinated pork on a baking tray lined with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway, until caramelized and cooked through.
  4. While the pork is baking, prepare the burger buns by toasting them lightly in a pan or oven.
  5. Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly.
  6. To assemble the burgers, place a generous amount of sliced char siu on the bottom half of each bun, add cucumber slices, and top with cilantro.
  7. If desired, spread mayonnaise on the top half of the bun before closing the burger.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your Cantonese Char Siu Burger!
