Ingredients

  • Pork shoulder - 300 grams
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Honey - 1 tablespoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Water - 100 milliliters
  • All-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • Instant yeast - 5 grams
  • Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Milk - 120 milliliters
  • Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, five-spice powder, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and water to create the marinade.
  2. Cut the pork shoulder into strips and marinate for at least 30 minutes, preferably overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Gradually add warm milk and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Place marinated pork on a baking tray and roast for 25-30 minutes, basting occasionally with marinade, until cooked through and caramelized.
  6. Once the dough has risen, divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a flat circle.
  7. Cut the roasted pork into small pieces and place a spoonful on each dough circle, folding the edges to enclose the filling.
  8. Place the buns on a steamer tray lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for an additional 15 minutes.
  9. Steam the buns for about 15 minutes until fluffy.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg and serve warm.
