Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 200g
  • Active dry yeast - 5g
  • Sugar - 10g
  • Warm water - 120ml
  • Ground pork - 150g
  • Cabbage, finely chopped - 100g
  • Green onions, chopped - 2 stalks
  • Soy sauce - 15ml
  • Sesame oil - 5ml
  • Garlic, minced - 1 clove
  • Ginger, minced - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 2g
  • Pepper - 1g
  • Vegetable oil - 5ml for frying

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the ground pork, chopped cabbage, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, minced ginger, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into a round disc, about 10cm in diameter.
  6. Place a spoonful of the pork and cabbage filling in the center of each disc. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch to seal the filling inside, forming a bun.
  7. Place the buns on a piece of parchment paper and let them rest for an additional 10 minutes.
  8. In a steamer, bring water to a boil. Place the buns in the steamer, cover, and steam for 15 minutes until fluffy and cooked through.
  9. In a frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Lightly fry each bun for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown, if desired.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Cabbage and Pork Bao!
