Ingredients

  • Octopus - 500 grams, cleaned
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Rice wine - 30 ml
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Star anise - 1 piece
  • Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)
  • Water - 500 ml

Steps

  1. In a large pot, bring 500 ml of water to a boil. Add the cleaned octopus and simmer for about 30 minutes until tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, stirring until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the soy sauce, rice wine, sugar, and star anise. Mix well to combine.
  4. Return the octopus to the pot and add enough water to cover the octopus. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook on low heat for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the lid and increase the heat to reduce the sauce for an additional 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Serve the braised octopus hot, garnished with chopped green onions and cilantro.
