- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Oyster sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Star anise - 1 piece
- Beef broth - 200 ml
- Carrots - 1 medium, diced
- Frozen peas - 50 grams
- Flour - 250 grams
- Butter - 100 grams, cold and cubed
- Egg - 1, for egg wash
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 60 ml, cold
Steps
- In a large pot, heat a little oil over medium heat and sauté the onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant.
- Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides.
- Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce, five-spice powder, star anise, and beef broth. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the diced carrots and cover the pot. Cook on low heat for about 1.5 hours until the beef is tender.
- Once cooked, remove the star anise and allow the filling to cool. Stir in frozen peas.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt. Add cold butter and rub into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Stir in cold water gradually until the dough comes together. Knead gently, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 5 mm thick. Cut into circles large enough to hold filling.
- Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each circle, fold over, and seal the edges with a fork.
- Transfer to a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.
