Ingredients

  • Beef brisket - 500 grams
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Hoisin sauce - 30 ml
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2, chopped for garnish
  • Cilantro - a handful, chopped for garnish

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, five-spice powder, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and black pepper to create a marinade.
  2. Place the beef brisket in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it, ensuring it's well-coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F). Remove the brisket from the marinade and place it in a baking dish. Reserve the marinade for later.
  4. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake the brisket for 2 hours, until it's tender.
  5. After 2 hours, remove the brisket from the oven and brush it with the reserved marinade. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F), uncover the brisket, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes to caramelize the outside.
  6. Once done, remove the brisket from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  7. Slice the brisket against the grain and serve it garnished with chopped green onions and cilantro.
