Ingredients

  • Beef short ribs - 500 grams
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Hoisin sauce - 30 ml
  • Brown sugar - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Star anise - 2 pieces
  • Water - 250 ml
  • Green onions - 2, chopped for garnish
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon for garnish

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 160°C (320°F).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and water to create the marinade.
  3. Add the beef short ribs to the marinade, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
  4. In a large oven-proof dish, place the marinated short ribs and pour the remaining marinade over them. Add the star anise on top.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours, until the ribs are tender.
  6. After 2 hours, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes to caramelize the sauce, basting the ribs with the sauce halfway through.
  7. Once done, remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
