Ingredients

  • White fish fillets (such as tilapia or snapper) - 400 grams
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Onion - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Bell pepper (any color) - 1 medium, sliced
  • Tomato - 2 medium, chopped
  • Cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Lime - 1, juiced
  • Coconut milk - 200 ml
  • Vegetable broth - 200 ml
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Dried chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh parsley - for garnish

Steps

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent.
  2. Add the sliced bell pepper and chopped tomato to the pot, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  3. Pour in the vegetable broth and coconut milk, then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  4. Season the broth with salt, black pepper, and dried chili flakes, adjusting to taste.
  5. Gently place the fish fillets into the pot, ensuring they are submerged in the broth. Cover and let cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  6. Stir in the chopped cilantro and lime juice, allowing the flavors to meld for another 2 minutes.
  7. Serve the Peixada Cearense hot, garnished with fresh parsley, alongside rice or crusty bread if desired.
