Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 1 cup
  • Water - 1/4 cup
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Hearts of palm - 1 cup, chopped
  • Onion - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Green bell pepper - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
  • Nutritional yeast - 2 tablespoons
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Oil for frying - as needed

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, water, olive oil, and salt. Knead until you form a smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. In a skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and green bell pepper, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped hearts of palm, nutritional yeast, black pepper, paprika, and cilantro to the skillet. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it's about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles or squares, depending on your preference.
  5. Place a tablespoon of the hearts of palm filling onto the center of each dough piece. Fold over and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the pastel in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy your Pastel de Palmito!
