- Water - 1/4 cup
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Hearts of palm - 1 cup, chopped
- Onion - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Green bell pepper - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
- Nutritional yeast - 2 tablespoons
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Paprika - 1/4 teaspoon
- Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Oil for frying - as needed
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, water, olive oil, and salt. Knead until you form a smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- In a skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and green bell pepper, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the chopped hearts of palm, nutritional yeast, black pepper, paprika, and cilantro to the skillet. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it's about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles or squares, depending on your preference.
- Place a tablespoon of the hearts of palm filling onto the center of each dough piece. Fold over and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the pastel in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot and enjoy your Pastel de Palmito!
