Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Panko breadcrumbs - 1 cup (100 grams)
  • All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup (60 grams)
  • Unsweetened plant milk - 1/2 cup (120 ml)
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons (30 ml)
  • Vegetable oil - for frying (about 1/4 cup or 60 ml)
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Onion powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vegan tonkatsu sauce - for serving

Steps

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes, then cut it into two thick slabs.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. In another bowl, pour the plant milk, and in a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat each tofu slab first in the flour mixture, then dip into the plant milk, and finally coat thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the breaded tofu slabs.
  6. Fry the tofu for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove the tofu from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve the crispy tofu katsu with vegan tonkatsu sauce drizzled on top.
