- Firm tofu - 300 grams
- Panko breadcrumbs - 1 cup (100 grams)
- All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup (60 grams)
- Unsweetened plant milk - 1/2 cup (120 ml)
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons (30 ml)
- Vegetable oil - for frying (about 1/4 cup or 60 ml)
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Onion powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegan tonkatsu sauce - for serving
Steps
- Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes, then cut it into two thick slabs.
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- In another bowl, pour the plant milk, and in a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.
- Coat each tofu slab first in the flour mixture, then dip into the plant milk, and finally coat thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the breaded tofu slabs.
- Fry the tofu for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the tofu from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve the crispy tofu katsu with vegan tonkatsu sauce drizzled on top.
