Ingredients

  • spaghetti - 200g
  • olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • onion - 1 medium, diced
  • crushed tomatoes - 400g (1 can)
  • basil - 1 teaspoon, dried
  • oregano - 1 teaspoon, dried
  • red pepper flakes - 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
  • salt - to taste
  • black pepper - to taste
  • fresh basil - a handful, for garnish

Steps

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente.
  2. While the pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add minced garlic and diced onion to the saucepan, sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes to develop the flavors.
  6. Once the pasta is cooked, drain it and reserve a little pasta water.
  7. Combine the drained spaghetti with the marinara sauce, adding a splash of reserved pasta water if needed to reach the desired consistency.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil.
