Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 100 grams
  • cocoa powder - 10 grams
  • baking soda - 1/2 teaspoon
  • salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • sugar - 80 grams
  • vegetable oil - 30 ml
  • unsweetened applesauce - 50 grams
  • plant-based milk - 60 ml
  • apple cider vinegar - 1 teaspoon
  • vanilla extract - 1/2 teaspoon
  • red food coloring - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease two 4-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix the sugar, vegetable oil, applesauce, plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the red food coloring until the batter is evenly colored.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cakes are cooling, prepare a vegan frosting of your choice, such as a vegan cream cheese frosting.
