- all-purpose flour - 100 grams
- cocoa powder - 10 grams
- baking soda - 1/2 teaspoon
- salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- sugar - 80 grams
- vegetable oil - 30 ml
- unsweetened applesauce - 50 grams
- plant-based milk - 60 ml
- apple cider vinegar - 1 teaspoon
- vanilla extract - 1/2 teaspoon
- red food coloring - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease two 4-inch round cake pans.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix the sugar, vegetable oil, applesauce, plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the red food coloring until the batter is evenly colored.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cakes are cooling, prepare a vegan frosting of your choice, such as a vegan cream cheese frosting.
