Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 400 grams
  • Nori sheets - 2 sheets
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Cornstarch - 1/2 cup
  • All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Onion powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Sparkling water - 1 cup
  • Oil for frying - as needed
  • Vegan tartar sauce - for serving

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then slice it into fillet-like shapes.
  2. Cut the nori sheets into halves and wrap each tofu slice with a piece of nori, securing it with a little water.
  3. In a bowl, mix soy sauce and lemon juice, and marinate the nori-wrapped tofu for about 10 minutes.
  4. In another bowl, combine cornstarch, flour, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Gradually whisk in the sparkling water to create a smooth batter.
  6. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat until hot.
  7. Dip each marinated tofu fillet into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated, and carefully place it in the hot oil.
  8. Fry each side for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve hot with vegan tartar sauce and your choice of side like fries or salad.
