Ingredients
- Firm tofu - 300 grams
- Nori sheets - 2 sheets
- All-purpose flour - 100 grams
- Cornstarch - 50 grams
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
- Smoked paprika - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Sparkling water - 200 milliliters
- Vegetable oil - for frying
- Potatoes - 2 large (about 400 grams)
- Vegan tartar sauce - for serving
- Lemon wedges - for garnish
Steps
- Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into fish-like fillets.
- Cut the nori sheets into strips and wrap each tofu piece with nori to impart a fishy flavor.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- Gradually whisk in the sparkling water until a smooth batter forms.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into thick fries, then soak in water for 10 minutes to remove excess starch.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat (about 180°C).
- Drain the potato fries and pat them dry with a kitchen towel, then fry them in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 5-7 minutes). Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Dip each nori-wrapped tofu piece into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place in the hot oil.
- Fry the battered tofu for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve the vegan fish and chips hot with vegan tartar sauce and lemon wedges.
