Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Nori sheets - 2 sheets
  • All-purpose flour - 100 grams
  • Cornstarch - 50 grams
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Smoked paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Sparkling water - 200 milliliters
  • Vegetable oil - for frying
  • Potatoes - 2 large (about 400 grams)
  • Vegan tartar sauce - for serving
  • Lemon wedges - for garnish

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into fish-like fillets.
  2. Cut the nori sheets into strips and wrap each tofu piece with nori to impart a fishy flavor.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Gradually whisk in the sparkling water until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Peel the potatoes and cut them into thick fries, then soak in water for 10 minutes to remove excess starch.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat (about 180°C).
  7. Drain the potato fries and pat them dry with a kitchen towel, then fry them in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 5-7 minutes). Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Dip each nori-wrapped tofu piece into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place in the hot oil.
  9. Fry the battered tofu for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve the vegan fish and chips hot with vegan tartar sauce and lemon wedges.
