Ingredients
- Firm Tofu - 300 grams
- Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
- Vegetable Oil - 4 tablespoons
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Szechuan Peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Red Chili Flakes - 1 teaspoon
- Soy Sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Rice Vinegar - 1 tablespoon
- Brown Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Green Onions - 2, chopped
- Sesame Oil - 1 teaspoon
- Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)
Steps
- Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
- In a bowl, toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch until they are evenly coated.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until golden brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally. Remove the tofu and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Sauté the minced garlic and ginger for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the Szechuan peppercorns and red chili flakes, and cook for another 30 seconds to release the flavors.
- Stir in the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar, mixing well. Let the sauce simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss it in the sauce until well coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
- Drizzle with sesame oil, and garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro before serving.
