Ingredients

  • Firm Tofu - 300 grams
  • Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
  • Vegetable Oil - 4 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Szechuan Peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
  • Red Chili Flakes - 1 teaspoon
  • Soy Sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Rice Vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Brown Sugar - 1 tablespoon
  • Green Onions - 2, chopped
  • Sesame Oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a bowl, toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch until they are evenly coated.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until golden brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally. Remove the tofu and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Sauté the minced garlic and ginger for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the Szechuan peppercorns and red chili flakes, and cook for another 30 seconds to release the flavors.
  6. Stir in the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar, mixing well. Let the sauce simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss it in the sauce until well coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  8. Drizzle with sesame oil, and garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro before serving.
