Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • granulated sugar - 50 grams
  • active dry yeast - 7 grams
  • whole milk - 120 ml
  • unsalted butter - 30 grams, melted
  • large egg - 1
  • vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • salt - 1/4 teaspoon
  • vegetable oil - for frying
  • jelly or jam (your choice) - 100 grams
  • powdered sugar - for dusting

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick on a floured surface.
  7. Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or glass (about 7-8 cm in diameter) and place them on a floured baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry the doughnuts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on paper towels. While warm, inject or fill each doughnut with jelly or jam using a piping bag.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
