Ingredients

  • Cabbage - 1 medium head
  • Ground beef - 250 grams
  • Cooked white rice - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Tomato sauce - 400 grams
  • Dried oregano - 1 teaspoon
  • Dried thyme - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Parsley - 2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the core of the cabbage and blanch the whole head for about 5-7 minutes until the leaves are tender but still firm. Remove from water and let cool.
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, sautéed onion and garlic, oregano, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  4. Carefully peel off cabbage leaves, trying to keep them whole. If leaves are too thick, you can trim the spine for easier rolling.
  5. Place about 2 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides over and roll from the bottom to the top to secure the filling. Repeat until all filling is used.
  6. In a large pot or deep skillet, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the pot, layering them if necessary. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top.
  7. Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
  8. Serve warm, garnished with fresh parsley.
