- Grits - 1 cup
- Water - 2 cups

Steps
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Add 1 cup of grits and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, stirring continuously.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- In the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in 1/2 cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of butter until melted and combined.
- Remove from heat and mix in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder until creamy.
