Ingredients

  • Grits - 1 cup
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Milk - 1/2 cup
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Cheddar cheese - 1/2 cup (shredded)
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Green onions - 2 tablespoons (chopped)
  • Cooked bacon - 4 strips (crumbled, optional)

Steps

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Add 1 cup of grits and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, stirring continuously.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. In the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in 1/2 cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of butter until melted and combined.
  5. Remove from heat and mix in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder until creamy.
  6. Serve the grits in bowls, garnished with chopped green onions and crumbled bacon if desired.
