Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 2 cups (250g)
  • Active dry yeast - 1 teaspoon (3g)
  • Warm water - 1/2 cup (120ml)
  • Granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons (25g)
  • Eggs - 1 large
  • Honey - 1 tablespoon (15g)
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (3g)
  • Unsalted butter, melted - 2 tablespoons (30g)
  • Raisins - 1/3 cup (50g)
  • Egg wash (1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water) - for brushing

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, egg, honey, and melted butter.
  3. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. After rising, punch down the dough and knead in the raisins. Divide the dough into three equal pieces.
  6. Roll each piece into a long strand and braid them together. Tuck the ends under to secure the shape.
  7. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the dough with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
