Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes (about 300g), thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Grease a small baking dish with butter.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the baking dish.
  5. Pour half of the cream mixture over the first layer of potatoes, followed by half of the Gruyère cheese.
  6. Add the remaining potato slices on top, then pour the rest of the cream mixture over them, and finish with the remaining Gruyère and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  9. Let the gratin sit for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set.
