Ingredients
- Whole wheat flour - 200 grams
- Warm water (about 40°C) - 120 ml
- Active dry yeast - 5 grams
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- Honey - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Canned crushed tomatoes - 200 grams
- Garlic (minced) - 1 clove
- Dried oregano - 1 teaspoon
- Fresh mozzarella cheese (sliced) - 125 grams
- Fresh basil leaves - a handful
- Red pepper flakes (optional) - to taste
Steps
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 250°C (482°F) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, and oregano. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch circle.
- Transfer the rolled dough to a piece of parchment paper. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
- Top with sliced mozzarella and sprinkle with red pepper flakes if desired.
- Carefully transfer the pizza (with parchment) onto the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, slice, and serve hot.
