Ingredients

  • fresh mussels - 500 grams
  • olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • shallot - 1 small, finely chopped
  • white wine - 100 milliliters
  • fresh parsley - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • red pepper flakes - 1/4 teaspoon
  • lemon - 1, juiced
  • salt - to taste
  • black pepper - to taste

Steps

  1. Rinse the mussels under cold water, scrubbing the shells to remove any debris. Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped.
  2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped shallot, sautéing until fragrant and translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Pour in the white wine and bring to a simmer. Add the red pepper flakes and season with salt and black pepper.
  4. Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover with a lid, and cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the mussels have opened up.
  5. Remove the pot from heat and stir in the lemon juice and chopped parsley. Discard any mussels that remain closed.
  6. Serve the mussels hot, garnished with additional parsley and a drizzle of olive oil if desired.
