Ingredients

  • Matzo meal - 1/2 cup
  • Eggs - 2 large
  • Water - 1/4 cup
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Fish fillet (white fish like cod or tilapia) - 200 grams
  • Carrot - 1 medium, diced
  • Celery - 1 stalk, diced
  • Onion - 1 small, diced
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Chicken broth - 4 cups
  • Fresh dill - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. In a bowl, mix the matzo meal, eggs, water, vegetable oil, salt, and pepper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion, carrot, and celery for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
  5. While the broth is heating, form the matzo mixture into balls about 2.5 cm in diameter.
  6. Once the broth is simmering, carefully add the matzo balls and cook for about 20 minutes until they are puffed and cooked through.
  7. In the last 5 minutes of cooking, add the fish fillet to the pot and simmer until the fish is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  8. Stir in the fresh dill and lemon juice. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  9. Serve hot, with additional dill for garnish if desired.
